What is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyoma ( add-en-o-my-OH-ma ) is the name given to an area of adenomyosis that is encapsulated by myometrial tissue. Adenomyosis is the penetration and growth of endometrial tissue from the uterine lining into the myometrium (uterine muscle). In adenomyosis, the endometrium invades the uterine muscle. It also produces abnormal uterine bleeding when some of the blood finally escapes the muscle resulting in prolonged spotting. Adenomyosis more often occurs in the posterior wall of the uterus.
