Restless Legs Syndrome
Restless legs syndrome is a disease that is neurological in nature. While it is not at all painful, it is one of the most frustrating conditions you could ever experience. Imagine trying to fall asleep at after a hard day of work and instead of sleep having to walk until you almost fall asleep on your feet. That is restless leg syndrome and it is a complete frustration to experience.
Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome
This condition only affects the legs. There is an indescribable feeling of needing to keep the legs moving even when you are so tired that you can't even keep your eyes open. As well, the legs get so restless that they jerk.
This feeling is hard to describe, even by RLS sufferers. Some describe it as an electrical feeling, others say it is like pins and needles while others describe the sensation as a feeling like there are small insects inside the legs. There are countless other descriptions of the restless feeling provided by other sufferers.
The only thing that can relieve the sensation is moving the legs. This can be done in the form of walking, riding a bike, yoga or any other type of activity that includes the legs. Sitting or lying down is not an option when the symptoms are present.
This condition may worsen or even begin during a pregnancy.
Restless Legs Syndrome Treatments
There are some medications being used to help provide relief from RLS and vitamin therapy has proven successful as well. It has been found that many RLS sufferers have an iron deficiency, which may require iron supplementation. It is recommended that blood tests be taken to measure any nutritional irregularities since they may be causing the problem.
Restless Leg Syndrome can be a progressive condition or it may end at any time without warning. Additional study needs to be done on this syndrome before any definite answers can be provided about its causes, cures and prognosis.
