What is Influenza Fever?

Influenza, usually known as the flu, is a respiratory infection caused by one of the influenza viruses that typically is spread by air or by direct contact. Most cases occur during epidemics, which peak during the winter months nearly every year. A particularly widespread and severe epidemic is called a pandemic.

Influenza (flu) is a viral upper respiratory illness that comes on suddenly, causing symptoms such as fever, body aches, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, a dry cough, and a sore or dry throat. The flu is not the same as the common cold; flu symptoms are usually more severe, and you will often miss more work or school than you would with a cold.

In Influenza Fever, patients may present with a large variety of symptoms and complaints. Some Influenza fever symptom are described below -

Influenza is a acute disease similar to all other fevers. Its cardinal symptoms are:

  • high temperature,
  • aches over the whole body,
  • stiffness of the limbs and a sore throat.

Modern medicine has not able to indict any of the known microbes as the causative factor in influenza and talks of a virus of the influenza group, its three varieties being named A, B, and C.

Influenza has struck various parts of the world in an epidemic form in the 19th and 20th centuries and taken a toll of millions of people. Influenza epidemics are periodically reported from the various parts of the world. Even through the fever in the influenza is not very high- rarely going above 103 degree F- its seriousness consists in its aftermath when serious complications in the form of infection of the lungs or the respiratory tract take place. If broncho-pneumonia develops after or during the last stage of influenza the poison may spread to the heart and cause cyanosis leading to death.

Modern medicine may accuse a virus or an epidemic for influenza, the real cause of its development is the toxic and run down condition of the body. It originates through a lowering of the vitality of the individual. It is interesting to note that most influenza epidemics have started and do start during or just after winter. Sometimes, it strikes people at the junction of the seasons. Like all other diseases it is natural attempt of the body to clean itself. If any complications arise in the case of influenza it is because of the wrong type of medicine which aims at suppressing the disorder. If it is treated like an ordinary fever, there is no danger of any sort whatsoever.

What are the Ttreatment of Influenza Fever?

In acute stage of influenza, the patient should abstain from all solid foods and take only liquid foods for two or three days .Vegetable and fruit juices will be especially beneficial. These juices can be diluted with water on 50:50 basis. The liquid diet should be continued till the temperature comes down to normal. The child-patient should be encouraged to take warm-water enema daily during this period to cleanse his bowels. Hot fomentations may be applied to the spine or back and chest Simultaneously, cold compresses should be applied on the head. One or two glasses of hot water intake. daily during this period will be beneficial.
